Tom Woods: Calling All Polite, Rational Cain Supporters

By Tom Woods

The other day I wrote about the Florida straw poll that Herman Cain won by a substantial margin.  I didn’t call anyone stupid or evil for supporting Cain. I laid out some facts that appear to speak against him to anyone who supports the market economy and a free society. The three I pointed to in the post were his support for TARP, his 2008 endorsement of Mitt Romney (whom Cain supporters claim they despise), and his failure to see the housing collapse coming or even to detect that something might be wrong with the bubble economy.  It’s worse than that, actually — he gave the economy a clean bill of health practically until the collapse came.  That is a serious problem.  How can we want someone in charge at a critical moment like this whose grasp of the economy is evidently so poor?
I did not invent these things. They really happened. They need to be addressed.
Here are the replies I received from Cain supporters: Full Story

What would you bring to the white house: Ron Paul had the best answer

Santorum: we'd add a bedroom

Gingrich: We'd have Chess, Ballet, and less Czars

Paul: Common sense and austrian economics (best answer)

Romney

Bachmann: declaration and constitution...she needs them

Cain: a sense of humor

Huntsman: Motorcycles

Perry: Yea that is a popular idea. i'll agree...sort of.

We should keep sending them money

Huntsman: I think it's popular to say we should get out of afghanistan, so i'll say that

Audience didn't like the good dr's answer

but it was the truth

Rick Santorum dresses down Ron Paul for telling the truth

and then says we shouldn't believe the people who attacked us on why they attacked us

Ron Paul: What would we do if China did to us what we did to others?

Ron Paul: difference between Military and defense spending

Let's not occupy 130 countries and build world war 2 era planes!

Newt Gingrich: We need to intervene further and start more wars

Herman Cain says remove federal barriers such as EPA

to regain energy independence. Then he wants to set up an agency to dissolve agency's....

Santorum on immigration: build a fence and send troops (other's answer below) Ron Paul, Herman Cain not asked

until them enforce the laws regarding employers....until the border is secure no point in talking about it

Perry: we've spent a lot of money in Texas to fight illegal immigration, a fence is silly, we need 4500 border patrol agents and 1500 national guardsmen (I wonder how he wants to pay for it?)

Santorum: Perry gave in state tuition to illegals, we need to make english the official language.

Perry: Yes I gave illegal aliens the right to get in state tuition, so what, it doesn't matter if you broke the law to get here.

Bachmann: It is not the American way, subsidizing criminal activity is not the American way, make illegals have sponsors and learn English

Perry: it's a states rights issue (strange response)

Huntsman: It's treasonous for Rick to say we can't secure the border. (lame attempt at a joke) He also supports drivers licenses that aren't really licenses but allows them to drive...

Romney: Of course we build a fence and don't give illegals in state tuition or drivers licenses

Perry: It's a states rights issue, in the state of Texas it's ok to break the laws as long as it gets me re-elected

Bachmann (backing up what dr. paul said earlier)

Executive order cannot stop Obamacare.

She is wrong about the constitutionality of Romneycare though...strange for a self professed constitutionalist. I thought she'd be familiar with the 9th and 10th amendment.

She should have attack Romney's philosophical weakness, that he believes it is the right of any government to force people to buy a product, instead of misrepresenting the constitution

Finally a question for Ron Paul again:

Ron Paul: In a welfare society the government would take care of him, under my policy....He is responsible for himself.

Moderator should we just let him die?

Paul: No, there are charitable organizations that can help, as a dr. we never turned anyone away....but the government should not be involved!

Awesome response to a "gotcha" question

Romney: Romneycare different from Obamacare

Ignore Obama if he says differently!

Rick Perry: I will not say if states can or cannot pass "romneycare"

but Obamacare was modeled after Obama care

Romney: I'll ignore the question about romneycare

Cain: repeal Obamacare pass market driven reforms

I hope someone says "allow the free markets to work and let people buy insurance across state lines"

Santorum: Perry's forced HPV Vaccine is big government run amuck

He is right for once....half as good as a broken clock

Bachmann: I'm offended for all the little girls you forced injections on

Knockout punch

It's funny that Perry thinks it's ok to force children to take drugs but not buy insurance

They are both horrible but how is one better or worse? He is saying it had an "opt out" but you had to request permission from the state to have them not force your children to take drugs....there should be no OPT OUT...only an opt in, if you believe in free markets....let them work

Rick Perry on HPV: I made a mistake but not really

I will use executive order to do what I want (if it's popular)

Ron Paul: Presidents have abused executive orders for years.

"I will never use the executive order to legislate"

Would you support the fair tax? Romney's progressive answer

Mitt Romney: It's a great idea but it's too little for the rich and too much for the rest....a progressive tax system by a progressive rino

Gingrich: Why is it wrong for oil companies to have loopholes but not GE

He has a good point on this one. Of course he is wrong about corporate welfare....neither GE, exxon, nor anyone else should get them

Question of the night!! How much of my money should I be allowed to keep

Huntsman: It depends how much you make but we should take from 8-14% don't worry how much we take...worry about the debt

Mitt Romney: Audit the fed but we need to have them

I trust the fed over congress..

WOW!!!

Perry: Yes, Bernake is treasonous

but "we need to have a fed"

What is your position on the federal reserve? Santorums answer: audit them, Cains answer: They could be awesome!

Rick Santorum: Audit them and make them a sound money single charter. Obama's economy would need to improve just to be a disaster...

Herman Cain: Yes audit the fed and fix it. It could be an awesome organization (paraphrased of course

Bachmann: I would not reappoint Bernake and I was against the bailout (i'm not sure she was...I think she voted for Bush's bailout)

Can you be pro worker and pro business

Herman Cain: Yes with the right leadership

John Huntsman: (why are you a better job creator than the other candidate?) We need more workers and we'll get it by electing me. We have a plan and it's better than everyone elses (he then cites his plan which is the same talking points as the others, tax, regulation, energy)

Question: How will you fix the economy? Perry's answer is hypocritical of course.

John Huntsman: This is a human tragedy. The economy is bad. My program will match my program in Utah. Strip out tax loopholes, clean up corporate welfare, reform regulations (obligatory obamacare hit) become energy independent

Rick Perry: Obama will raise taxes. (He then goes on to attack a stimulus plan that HE SUPPORTED!) lower taxes and reform regulations

Michele Bachmann: Pay for spending and reform/lower taxes. I was the leading voice against raising the debt ceiling (What about Ron Paul?) pass a FTA, repeal dodd/frank and Obamacare, have backbone

Herman Cain: Flat tax...

Mitt Romney: Perry was lucky to have such a free and energy rich state state....but I know how to grow an economy (then he hits Obama talks about taxes/regulation/and energy) wisely brought up the Boehing case. Rick Perry's job growth is lower than Bush or Richards

For some reason Perry gets another shot. So far they have let Perry/Romney have as much time as they want and they have cut off Ron Paul in the middle of an important point

Ron Paul: My taxes have doubled and debt nearly trippled under Perry. Most of the jobs "created" were government jobs. Government doesn't on our money. We spent $1billion on an embassy in baghdad

For some reason Rick Perry was given another shot. He has spoken 3 times on this question

Newt Gingrich: (question is will you compromise with dems?) 4 years I was speaker more jobs were created in Utah, Mass, and Tx. than when Huntsman, Perry, and Romney were governors of those states. People create jobs not government...it was a good answer

Santorum was ignored

Question: how will you balance budget and control spending?

Gingrich: That's a myth...control waste and we'll be fine. (That's the oldest line in the book)

Santorum: (asked about repealing prescription drug benefits) Santorum is a known nationalist and of course he would keep it.  "I'm a leader and I trust Americans"

Perry: No, I wouldn't vote to repeal prescription drug benefits. (how does this coincide with his earlier position on the constitution?)

Romney: I wouldn't repeal it, i'd reform it. (it's like they are all reading generic talking points) let's cut and cap spending and grow the economy, I have a plan!

Paul: We shouldn't of started it and I voted against it but it's not my top priority. I'd rather quit spending money killing people before I cut benefits for Americans (best and most honest response)

Bachmann: Railed against the nanny state and said we need to have personal responsibility....but she didn't say yes or no

First question: How will you convince seniors that ssi & medicare need changing?

How will you convince seniors that ssi & medicare need changing?

Bachmann: Reform the system, Obama stole money, medicare will be bankrupt, we need to save these programs? (Funny answer from a so called "constitutionalist")

Perry: We'll save SSI for those who are own it or soon will be. Reform the system for the rest

Romney: I agree with Perry except that SSI is not a ponzi scheme. He then attacks the Constitution and the 10th amendment...(He is on record as using the 10th amendment to defend Romneycare)

Perry: SSI is unconstitutional but we aren't going to take it away? States should deliver SSI

This is turning into another Romney/Perry show...

Ron Paul: SSI is Broke, we spent all the money, I tried to pass a bill that would stop congress from robbing SSI. If people wouldn't have spent the money we'd be ok. I want to allow young people to opt out (huge applause)

Cain: Call it what you want, it's broke....let's force them to have personal retirement accounts like Chile

Huntsman: Nothing's off the table except tonights drama. (incoherent remark about Kurt Cobain) It's most important for this party to win regardless of issues

Gingrich: Perry/Romney good, Obama bad. Go Republican!!! (moderator asks again and gingrich again attacks Obama) Create jobs and ssi is fine, (and then he steals from Cain) force younger people to save money

Santorum: I'm not w/ Romney or Perry, who's w/me? I said a long time ago that SSI was in trouble...(who didn't?)

Rick Perry told his first lie

He said he wants to make washington as inconsequential in our lives as possible, based on his record in the state level....I doubt it!

Opening statements

The candidates are giving their opening statements....basically saying nothing at this point...

The debate is about to begin

I'll be live blogging here as much as possible but I am having trouble w the signal...

The Oak Park Republic: Ron Paul: The War on Jobs

The Oak Park Republic: Ron Paul: The War on Jobs: If the Obama administration succeeds, it could result in the virtual destruction of right-to-work laws all across the country: No longer could private companies decide for themselves where to move or open new facilities; the government would now take on that responsibility and make decisions based solely on what benefits the big-labor elite. Right-to-work states would be left out in the cold.

The Oak Park Republic: EPA declares hay a pollutant in effort to drive sm...:"Now that EPA has declared hay a pollutant, every farmer and rancher that stores hay, or that leaves a broken hay bale in the field, is potentially violating EPA rules and subject to an EPA enforcement action," responded Callicrate. "How far are we going to let this agency go before we stand up and do something about it?"

The Oak Park Republic: North Miami Beach police kill mentally disabled ma...: "They could tell him to drop the gun. They say they told him to drop it and he raised his hand," Harding told WFOR. "He probably raised his hand to hand them the gun because he is afraid of police. The family is now demanding answers and changes to the North Miami Beach Police Department.
