Facing the imminent prospect of default, the White House and Senate Republicans worked through Sunday to close a debt ceiling deal that gives President Barack Obama greater certainty in managing the Treasury’s borrowing needs while making a joint commitment to major deficit reduction without any explicit concessions by the GOP on new tax revenues.

Taxpayers forked out $650,000 for Oprah Winfrey's Melbourne visit
Written by Peter Mickelburough
In just three days we lavished $650,000 of our finest dining, wining and touring on Oprah, one of the world's richest and most influential women, and 92 of her "mates" from the US.
The unheralded scope of the splurge orchestrated by Tourism Victoria can be publicly revealed for the first time after a six-month battle by the Herald Sun to view the accounts under Freedom of Information.
For almost two months Tourism Victoria refused to confirm the final taxpayer bill or answer a list of Herald Sun questions, including how much unbilled time its staff contributed to the visit.
Receipts released under FoI show there was little the Brumby and then Baillieu governments wouldn't do in the pursuit of "O".

Ron Paul Polls well against Obama
LAKE JACKSON, Texas -- According to recent surveys in the New York Times, 2012 Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul polls quite well in a head to head match up against President Obama. In the polls, Paul comes within 5 percentage points of the president, doing slightly better than a majority of the other Republican contenders.
“It is exciting to see how well Dr. Paul does against the President, better than the majority of announced candidates,” said Ron Paul 2012 spokesman Jesse Benton. “It is proof that Americans are sick of the status quo and are eager to support a leader who stands for constitutionally limited government and individual liberty.” Read more

Ron Paul Supporters form Revolution Pac
Mike ShanerJuly 20, 2011
Supporters of Libertarian Icon Ron Paul have formed a Superpac which will allow supporters who have already donated $2500 (the maximum amount allowed by federal law) to keep on giving.
“There will be a significant amount of people who meet the contribution cap to the campaign, and we hope those people will use us as an overflow,” Revolution PAC president Gary Franchi told POLITICO.
“As grassroots supporters of Ron Paul, we’ve always sort of just acted on our own,” Franchi said. “This is really more of a formalized way to solidify and execute grassroots support for the candidate.”
To stay in tune with the values of a grassroots movement Revolution Pac will not be taking donations from corporations.

A message from the Libertarian party regarding Freedom fest
July 18, 2011
Dear Friend of Liberty,
I just returned from FreedomFest, a conference which bills itself as "The Greatest Libertarian Show on Earth!"
FreedomFest is not affiliated with the Libertarian Party, but lots of Libertarian Party members attended. There were over 2,000 people, and many organizations that support libertarian principles participated.
The Libertarian Party had a strong presence, with three of us listed in the program guide as speakers, including an opening by LNC member Wayne Allyn Root, a presentation on "The Case for the Libertarian Party" by LNC Chair Mark Hinkle and me, and exhibitor booths by the California Libertarian Party and the national LP.
The program guide contained tributes to eleven freedom advocates including LP co-founder David F. Nolan (1943-2010), and the first LP presidential nominee, John Hospers (1918-2011).
Our Vice Chair, Mark Rutherford, and elected Libertarian Indianapolis Councilor Ed Coleman attended, as well as the LP California Chair, Kevin Takenaga (along with many other California Libertarians), LP Pennsylvania Chair Lou Jasikoff, and many others, including some of the top donors to the LP.
My goals were to promote the Libertarian Party, network with other organizations, and learn from some of the top speakers in the movement.
Rob Kampia, Executive Director of the Marijuana Policy Project, gave a presentation entitled "Is marijuana policy the only issue heading in a libertarian direction?"
I was unable to attend Rob's presentation, but unfortunately, the answer to his question may be yes, because there aren't too many areas where freedom has advanced lately under either Republican or Democratic control. Certainly the topics at FreedomFest seemed more oriented towards pointing out encroachments on freedom and protecting your investments in a failing economy, rather than celebrating the advancement of freedom and prosperity.
My favorite speaker was Judge Andrew Napolitano, host of Freedom Watch on Fox Business Network. He gave a great speech focused on defending our freedoms against abuses by the government. He ripped the Patriot Act and many other recent and long past abuses of the constitution. In response to the question "What can individuals do to fight back?" Judge Napolitano said something along the lines of, "Point out in public when your congressmen are violating the freedoms protected by the Constitution."
That's something Libertarian Party candidates are excellent at.
We'll have videos from the event to share in the coming days.
Sincerely,
Wes Benedict
Executive Director
Libertarian National Committee

"Deadfish" gets it: Rahm Emanuel could teach President Obama a few things
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel sent pink slips to up to 625 city employees last week and he plans to privatize many of those jobs in order to close Illinois’ $30 million budget gap, the Chicago Tribune reported.
Nearly 130 seasonal transportation workers will be told to leave immediately.
According to the Tribune, “Emanuel said he intends to get private companies to clean the city’s airports and libraries, work now done by city employees. Operators at the city’s water-bill call center and employee benefit managers also will see their jobs outsourced. Those union workers will receive 30- and 45-day layoff notices.” Full Story

Durbin Bill would allow FDA to seize full control of our health! Here's how to stop it
Sen. Durbin’s disingenuous “Dietary Supplement Labeling Act,” which we told you about last week, needs to be defeated. Please contact your senators!
The bill, S.1310, is finally available for viewing by the American public. It exploits the Lazy Cakes incident, where a rogue food company decided to put melatonin into brownies and allowed them to be sold to children. But that case was about the illegal actions of a food manufacturer, whereas this bill is simply another attempt to limit your access to dietary supplements.
The proposed law trusts the FDA and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to decide what levels and combinations of dietary ingredients are considered safe and what aren’t. Given the FDA’s profound bias against supplements, and the skewed, anti-science recommendations of the IOM’s recent vitamin D report, these are hardly trustworthy sources of guidance!
If the bill is passed, neither the FDA nor the IOM will even be subject to any clear standards. They can just make it all up as they go along. Their judgments can be completely arbitrary.
The whole thrust of British and American constitutional history is telling the government it can’t just do anything it likes. There must be written standards and rules encoded in law. The government must follow those standards and rules like anyone else. It can’t just be arbitrary. FULL STORY

Perry tells Des Moines Register he's feeling 'call' to run
Rick Perry says he is feeling "the call" to run for President:
Here's hoping the call will be ignored
“I’m not ready to tell you that I’m ready to announce that I’m in,” Gov. Rick Perry told The Des Moines Register. “But I’m getting more and more comfortable every day that this is what I’ve been called to do. This is what America needs.”
Another big-name potential Republican presidential candidate who is still on the sidelines, Sarah Palin, told Fox News in May that she has “that fire in the belly” to run. It remains a question whether Perry does.
“I’ll be real honest with you, I don’t wake up in the morning – never did and still don’t today – and say, ‘Gee, I want to be president of the United States,’ ” Perry, 51, said by phone last week.
But his wife, Anita, and hundreds of people nationwide say they want him to run, he said.
Here's hoping the call will be ignored

Obama recognizes Libya's rebel movement despite not knowing them
By Paul Richter
The Obama administration on Friday formally recognized Libya’s leading rebel group as the country’s legitimate government, a move designed to increase pressure on Libyan leader Moammar Kadafi, while freeing up foreign-held funds for the cash-starved rebels.July 15, 2011, 9:03 a.m.
Appearing at an international conference in Istanbul, Turkey,Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the United States was joining 29 other countries in granting official recognition. She said the administration now recognized the council as the “legitimate government authority for Libya,” and would treat it that way until an “interim authority” takes over.
The administration has resisted taking this formal step for months, because of concerns that the loosely organized council could include dangerous militants, and because of worries that the group didn’t meet legal definitions of a sovereign government. FULL STORY

Supreme court takes right to work case
From Mark Mix:
While union lawyers in Wisconsin are trying to sidestep Foundation-won court precedents curtailing union-boss power over individual workers, the United States Supreme Court announced last month it will hear another key case brought by Foundation staff attorneys.
You see, back in 2005, California State Employee Association (CSEA) union bosses demanded a "special assessment" to raise money from every single state employee covered by a union monopoly bargaining contract for a union political fund.
Union bosses claimed they needed these "extra" millions to defeat ballot initiatives that would limit their monopoly power over government workers and stranglehold on California taxpayers -- demonstrating once again how forced dues corrupt the political process.
But, thanks to previous Right to Work Foundation victories at the Supreme Court, union bosses cannot compel independent workers to pay dues or fees that fund union politics.
In 1986, the Court unanimously ruled in Chicago Teachers Union v. Hudson that government-sector union bosses must provide employees with an audited breakdown of the union's expenditures and an opportunity to challenge the union's calculations of any forced dues or fees.
CSEA union bosses simply ignored the law with regard to the "special assessment" and denied workers any chance to opt out.
Foundation staff attorneys filed a class-action lawsuit on behalf of eight California government workers, including two former union members.
A federal district court ruled in 2007 against CSEA union bosses, requiring that they provide workers their rights under Hudson and refund any monies spent (plus interest) on union-boss politics to nonmembers who exercise their right to refrain from subsidizing the union's political fund.
A Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals panel overturned that decision, effectively encouraging union bosses to seize forced dues for politics from unwilling workers.
Foundation attorneys petitioned the Supreme Court to review the Ninth Circuit's ruling in March, and the Court announced in late June it will hear the case later this year.
Allowing the Ninth Circuit's ruling to stand would further undermine state employees' First Amendment rights.
A victory at the Supreme Court would provide additional protections to every government employee across the entire country.
The stakes are high!
Our strategic litigation program provides free legal aid to workers victimized by compulsory unionism and it depends on the voluntary support of concerned citizens like you.
As our attorneys make our 15th trip to the highest court in the land to defend individual workers against the abuses of forced unionism, let me once again say a heart-felt thank you for making this work possible.
