Taxpayers forked out $650,000 for Oprah Winfrey's Melbourne visit

In just three days we lavished $650,000 of our finest dining, wining and touring on Oprah, one of the world's richest and most influential women, and 92 of her "mates" from the US.

The unheralded scope of the splurge orchestrated by Tourism Victoria can be publicly revealed for the first time after a six-month battle by the Herald Sun to view the accounts under Freedom of Information.

For almost two months Tourism Victoria refused to confirm the final taxpayer bill or answer a list of Herald Sun questions, including how much unbilled time its staff contributed to the visit.
Receipts released under FoI show there was little the Brumby and then Baillieu governments wouldn't do in the pursuit of "O".
